Leagues we cover
Three officials, about 40 fouls a night, and a crew list posted around 9 a.m. ET on game day. That is enough time to read the crew before tip-off.
Two referees, two linesmen. Each minor penalty is about two minutes of power play at roughly 20% conversion, so a tight crew moves goals, shots and save props.
The home-plate umpire's zone is the purest official-impact story in sport. We will read it before first pitch, not grade it after the final out.
Seven-person crews, published a few days before kickoff. Crew effects on final scores are weak; the story is how games flow and which props it touches.
